In the spirit of the album’s namesake, Boldy offers an abstract and violent adventure through Detroit’s concrete jungle.

The end of Boldy James album run seems nowhere in sight. Ever since his 2020 album, “The Price of Tea in China”, he just hasn’t dropped a mediocre or bad LP and to be honest, it’s starting to seem like he’s incapable of doing so. Once again, Boldy shows that he’s a rapper whose lyrical creativity knows no bounds, even though his subject matter might not change, he constantly finds new and addictive ways to put a new spin on his messaging.

The producer of the album, RichGains, helps Boldy showcase his versatility by using obscure samples and a variety of different production choices. The song “Electric Blue” for example, sees Boldy rapping over a guitar-heavy indie rock sample that gives Boldy room to operate on a completely new wavelength. “No Extender” features a more soul-inspired lofi type beat, in the vein of J Dilla or Damu the Fudgemunk. It’s slow, methodical, and laid back, a perfect match for Boldy James’ rapping style.

Whenever I think of Boldy I think of him as a solo artist. An artist who relies on his own skill and isn’t really known for his use of features or reliance on them. Surprisingly though on this album, taking nothing away from Boldy mind you, the features are one of the best things about this album. Chuckstaaa is brilliant on “SOS”, his quiet breathy voice kicks in hard alongside RichGain’s raw and punchy production. “Hunnit Sales” featuring Sir Michael Rocks and Cassie Jo Craig, makes for one of the best feature tracks I’ve heard in recent memory. Michael Rocks effortlessly, and I mean effortlessly, glides over the beat with a slick flow that you can’t help but rewind the first time you hear it.

Although there may not be standout moments on this album like there are on “Manger In Mcnichols” or “Bo Jackson”, Indiana Jones shines in its simplicity. It doesn’t yearn to be some overzealous masterpiece or ambitious magnum opus, it’s direct and straightforward, which I think works best for the sound of this album.

Score/Good: For any other artist this might be an “excellent album”, however, this is Boldy James we’re talking about. It’s no secret that Boldy is capable of much much more than what is displayed on this album. “Manger in Mcnichols”, “The Price of Tea in China” and “Bo Jackson”, are all better projects. However, if you’re looking for a fix of slick street talk, superb beat-making, and equally good features, this album will definitely satisfy that craving.

[I rank albums on a scale of: Poor, Mediocre, Good, Excellent, Outstanding]

After meeting Martin himself, buying him a new sofa, and putting his old one in a glass display cage, Headie One has finally released his long-teased single, tributarily titled, “Martin’s Sofa”.

Due to his antics and memes from fans, Headie has made the rollout of the single a viral sensation within the UK Hip Hop community. “He’s doing everything besides dropping the song!”, a TikTok user cried as Headie posted a video of himself standing next to the infamous sofa he used to sleep on, placed in a glass cage like it belonged in the Louvre.

In case you haven’t been keeping up with Headie’s socials and you wondering who this mysterious Martin is, Martin is a friend from Headie’s come-up days who let the soon-to-be-famous rapper sleep on his sofa in the early days of his career.

The song serves as a tribute, not only to Headie’s own success but to the people that helped him along the way. A sentiment that isn’t often seen in the drill culture. The song itself nicely continues Headie’s seemingly endless run of great music. His previous single 50’s, which only came out a month prior, went down as a resounding success within the UK hip-hop community, and Martin’s Sofa has seemed to meet similar appraisal.

What makes this song so great in my opinion, is Headie’s storytelling ability. His lyrics of coming to and from shows from the humble beginnings of Martin’s Sofa feel very visual and even inspiring. It’s hard to imagine Headie ever struggling to make it as a rapper as he seems so engraved in the culture, however as he says in the song, everyone needs to start somewhere.

The song’s beat uses two main samples, Flatbush Zombies’ “Palm Trees” and Future’s Trap N”’gs. Many UK rap fans will be familiar with the Flatbush Zombies sample from Cadet’s iconic “Slut Freestyle”, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Headie is also paying tribute to the Clapham rapper as well.

With this new single, 50’s, and his Europe-centric mixtape “No Borders” which he released in November 2022, it seems like Headie might be the UK’s one to watch in 2023. All his latest releases show signs of a storm brewing and a potentially great Headie One album in the eye of it all.

Review of Pi’erre Bourne Good Movie Album.

Despite Pi’erre’s insanely good production and attention to detail, the rapper/producer overestimates his formula and ends up “just” missing the mark.

At this point if you said that Pi’erre is one of the best trap producers ever, I wouldn’t disagree. From “TLOP 4” to, in my opinion, his most impressive work, “Die Lit”, it seems like there’s no end to his creativity, often using obscure soundbites and samples to craft these hypnotic glitchy beats, which have since become a trademark sound in the underground trap community.

Over the past three years however, Pi’erre has used his talents to advance his own discography, specifically his “The Life of Pi’erre” series which he started way back in 2016. His projects often have a unique, spacy aura about them and with every song masterfully transitioning into the next, they feel like one long journey through Pi’erre’s headspace at the time he made them.

Good Movie is no different in this sense, every song scarily transitions into the next with seamless perfection, whilst still being perfectly enjoyable individually. This time around Pi’erre also uses skits as a way to build up to the track he’s transitioning to, “Kingdom Hall” being a good example.

Vocally, Pi’erre does a lot better on this album than he did on his last project “The Life of Pi’erre 5”. His melodies are catchier, his voice sounds brighter, and overall, he does a great job of capturing that balance of being engaging yet relaxing to listen to.

It’s hard to judge Pi’erre on his lyrics because even though he’s a rapper, the lyrics aren’t what make Pi’erre’s music great. From a critical point of view, you could argue they’re repetitive and uninspiring, but from a passive point of view they fit his music perfectly. His smooth voice and sometimes mantra-like flow mould into his beats, often acting as another layer to the instrumental, in similar fashion to his peer Playboi Carti. The song that best captures what I’m trying to say is “DJ In the Car”, instantly catchy in its lyrical simplicity with a chorus that addictive when combined with the songs tempo.

The only downside to Pi’erre’s minimalistic lyrical formula is that it gets too familiar a little bit too quickly. By “Kingdom Hall” you get to thinking the project is about to wrap itself up in the next 3 songs or so, but you look at the track-list and see there’s another 9 whole songs left. At this point, although the quality of the production doesn’t waver that much, everything starts to become background noise, simply because that dragging feeling is so prominent.

It’s also in the second half of the album where Pi’erre’s pen game gets a little bit too relaxed, “Rounds”, “System” and “Safe Haven”, are just too stale lyrically, despite they’re great beats. Although I will say the closing seconds on “Rounds” is one of my favourite moments on the album melodically.

The album closes on, what I think is easily the worst song, “Heart Say”, the constant shredding of the guitar becomes too jarring to listen to after the first minute and unfortunately Pi’erre doesn’t do much lyrically or melodically to save it.

Honestly, I’m just surprised that Pi’erre didn’t have the foresight to name the last song on the album “End Credits”.

Score/Good: (No pun intended). It’s clear to see that Pi’erre put a lot of time and effort into getting this project right, the transitions are inhumanly perfect, and the beat making is leagues ahead of a lot of other cookie cutter producers out there, however, the sluggish second half and lack of trimming round the edges stops this album from being excellent.

This movie is a good “recommendation to a friend”, but unfortunately, it’s not winning an Oscar anytime soon.

Reviewing ##B4GC2 ##B4GC2 EP

Autumn! returns to his “Pluggnb” roots with a warm-up EP that’s brilliant in it’s chilled-out simplicity.

After the meteoric rise of “Rage-Trap” many “Pluggnb” artists, including Autumn!, have chosen to momentarily abandon the genre, favouring the synth-heavy production of producers like BNYX and F1LTHY, over the airy, chilled-out production of “Pluggnb”. Thus, a large part of Trap’s underground community have dubbed “Pluggnb” as a dying sound, another once trendy sub genre that has finally run its course, and although this might be true, it still hasn’t stopped Autumn! from returning to the genre with what might be his best work yet.

##B4GC2 is a precursor to Autumn’s upcoming album Golden Child 2, a sequel to one of Autumn’s first projects, and just like Golden Child 1, ##B4GC2 oozes super-chilled, Pierre Bourne-esque production, however this time, layered with improved vocal mixing and way better song structure.

In my opinion the EP’s third song (“Know You Hear Me”) is the gem of the project, a standout example of what Autumn! can do with the “Pluggnb” sound when he truly tries. The vocals are mixed and layered perfectly, gelling with the beat as if they never existed separately.

The beat itself has a very reminiscent sunset ambience, a type of feeling you’d only share with the red sky on a late-evening walk. What’s most impressive is the progression of the beat, it starts with just a few airy chimes that fly around the drum pattern, and then towards the ends it all builds up and bursts into a single spiralling synth that feels like that moment when you just break through the clouds on an aeroplane flight.

Artistry I’d never expect from someone like Autumn! .

Although the other songs may not be as euphoric as “Know You Hear Me!”, they’re still beautiful and perfectly serene. “My Collection!” might be one of my favourite Autumn! songs ever, the rapper charmingly sings of all the girls he’s loved and lost in a tongue in cheek way over a bliss Final Fantasy-like beat.

Even if you’re in the worst of moods, “My Collection!” is a song that’ll do everything it can to lift you up.

If you’re anything like me ##B4GC2 might take a few listens before you realise it’s greatness, at first, I was leaning towards labelling it as mediocre, but when the EP clicked on my third listen, I was left begging for more music that sounded like it, good music can’t get any better than that.

SCORE/Excellent: ##B4GC2 feels like how Goku might feel riding on his cloud, it’s airy, peaceful and a joy to listen to if you like relaxing music. With no skips and addictive replay value, it’s hard not to call this excellent.
