Coming Up Roses is a band on the verge of a meteoric rise in the UK’s grassroots music scene; their latest EP serves as a vocal testament to this premise. They have been releasing a steady stream of music since 2019, characterised by strong, sonically expansive tunes. This current EP represents their finest collection of work to date.

The tunes on this album notably feature pristine, flare-filled production; they were produced by Joshua Rumble, who has worked with established artists such as Gang Of Four, Paul Tucker, Jack Penãte, Florence Welch, and Bastille. Their coherence as creatives shines and sizzles, for lack of a better word. The band’s songwriting efforts are heartfelt and raw, tugging at your heartstrings.

“Back The Way We Came” and “Don’t Let it Break Your Heart” initiated their EP campaign. At their core, both tracks are quintessential “feel-good” tunes featuring pulsating, rhythmic electric guitars with a touch of 1/8 delay and a strong, 4-on-the-floor beat; this band delivers that sound with originality and sincerity; this band stands out as a breath of fresh air. “Why” is good as well; a must-listen.

“Silence,” in my opinion, stands out as the strongest track in this collection. I’ve had it on repeat since I first got my hands on the EP. I must emphasise that it’s sonically explosive and expansive, yet this tune highlights one of the aspects I adore about this band. They write the songs that need to be written, unafraid to do so. This is the band defining the essence of music.

Below is my rating of the tunes on this record on a scale of 1-10

Don’t Let It Break Your Heart – 8

Back The Way We Came – 9

Silence – 10

Why – 9

Rating/Outstanding – Mark my words. This band is going to be big.

Sonya Lorelle lays bare her soul in “Into The Wild,” and I find myself profoundly touched by the depth of her sincerity.

In her highly anticipated fourth album, Sonya Lorelle embarks on a captivating journey, weaving together a tapestry of ten deeply evocative songs. Each of these tracks delves into the intricate labyrinth of grief, an emotion that unites us all in its universal embrace.

What truly sets this album apart is its raw, unfiltered honesty, a fearless portrayal that exposes the very essence of her being. It’s a musical odyssey that speaks from the depths of the heart, fearlessly exploring a diverse range of genres while evoking the spirit of a Carol King-esque aura while imprinting her unique signature onto every note and lyric.

The album gracefully opens with “Surrender,” a breathtaking debut single that serves as a testament to Lorelle’s avant-garde prowess and encapsulates the grandeur of a Bond-esque epic. In its soul-stirring verses, it gently captures the raw vulnerability experienced when we lose someone dear. For me personally, it’s not just a track; it’s an emotional powerhouse that not only sets the stage but invites you to an emotionally charged journey that lies ahead.

While the album undoubtedly carries both lyrical and sonic weight, it also has melancholic moments. It’s Time” is one such instance where the music becomes a soothing balm for the soul. Then there’s “Whiskey Crying,” a contest-winning traditionalist country gem that adds depth and variety to the record.
Furthermore, “Who Am I” takes a similar approach, evoking a sound reminiscent of the timeless tunes in Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”

The melodies woven throughout this album are often rich and full, creating a complex and enchanting soundscape. Yet, amidst this lush musical tapestry, there’s a hidden gem waiting to be uncovered. “Drunk On Your Kisses” is a raw and beautifully intimate piece, a testament to Lorelle’s remarkable ability to convey profound emotions with simplicity.

Below is a rating for each song on a scale of 1-10:

“Surrender” – 7

“Want This Life” – 6

“Losing You” – 8

“What You Gonna Do” – 7

“You’d Be Sorry” – 6

“It’s Time” – 8

“Who Am I” – 7

“In to The Wild” – 7

“Whiskey Crying” – 7

“Drunk On Your Kisses” – 8

SCORE/EXCELLENT: “Into The Wild” is an album that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, traversing the depths of grief and painting a vivid musical portrait of the human experience.

(We rank albums on a scale of: Poor, Mediocre, Good, Excellent, Outstanding).

Singer-songstress Laufey has unveiled her sophomore album, and she’s stealing hearts one track at a time.

She has infused jazz and vintage pop ballads, breathing a fresh breeze into the contemporary pop music landscape. “From the Start,” the eclectic lead single of this exceptional record, currently boasts over 100 million streams on Spotify and is tantalisingly close to breaking into the Billboard Hot 100. It’s a hit, and its melodic charm touches everyone I know. The tunes featured on this record are magical and truly enchanting.

“Dreamer” serves as a powerful album opener, featuring an acappella section at the beginning that exudes a distinct “Patti Page-esque” quality. It’s genuinely invigorating to witness Laufey embracing and celebrating her musical solid roots.

“Bewitched,” the title track, exudes an almost cinematic quality reminiscent of a song from a Disney film, both in terms of lyrics and sonically. “California & Me” and
“Promise” graciously emanates similar characteristics, creating a harmonious sonic experience that resonates with the album’s bewitching theme.

The album’s most exquisite moments are encapsulated within its core, where unrefined, organic melodies reign supreme. “Must Be Love” stands out as an eclectic pop ballad adorned with jazzy harmonies. In this composition, it is solely her, a guitar, a string ensemble, and her brilliance, which becomes even more luminous when stripped down to its essentials. Songs such as “Letter to My 13-Year-Old Self” and “Serendipity” testify to this artistic depth.

Laufey adroitly showcases a refined spectrum of talents throughout this record. The interlude “nocturne” (the title track draws forth reminiscences of Chopin’s oeuvre) impeccably showcases her virtuosic prowess on the piano; it is a piece that masterfully embodies the art of ‘lyric-less’ expression with a touch of elegance.

Below is my rating of each song on a scale of 1-10

“Dreamer” – 8

“Second Best” – 7.5

“Haunted” – 8

“Must Be Love” – 7.5

“While You Were Sleeping” – 6.5

“Lovesick” – 6

“California and Me” – 6

“Nocturne” – 7.5

“Promise” – 9

“From The Start” – 9

“Misty” – 6

“Serendipity” – 8

“Letter To My 13-Year-Old Self – 9

“Bewitched” – 7

Rating – Excellent. Laufey’s sophomore album is a captivating journey through a blend of jazz and vintage pop ballads, injecting fresh air into contemporary pop music. It’s an album that is artistically rich. Whether you’re a jazz, pop, or heartfelt ballad fan, this album has something to offer, making it a compelling addition to Laufey’s discography.

R2RCam’s latest album has undoubtedly made a lasting impression, although it treads a middle-of-the-road path in today’s music scene. With a staggering 30 tracks, this release embraces a quantity-over-quality approach, challenging conventional expectations.

This expansive opus attempts to blend R&B and mumble-rap influences, creating a sound that may evoke thoughts of the enigmatic artist “Yeat.” It’s evident that the artist, also known as “Cam Smith,” poured their creative energies into crafting this extensive collection.

In a music landscape where shorter albums often dominate, R2RCam’s audacious move to release such an extensive record is undeniably bold. It harks back to Lil Uzi Vert’s “Pink Tape,” in the sense that it is a hit or miss.

The album’s experimental nature is commendable, with “Did It First” offering a glimmer of promise. This standout track showcases a bold piano riff reminiscent of classic hip-hop records, momentarily hinting at the album’s potential. A similar fleeting moment can be found on “Set It Off,” which leans more towards “gangsta-rap.”

Then there’s “Hood Love Story,” which distinguishes itself with its unapologetic use of 808s and a beat firmly rooted in the 90s “Neo-soul” soundscape. It’s laden with synths, providing a somewhat refreshing departure within this music genre.

It’s worth noting that R2RCam wrote all 30 songs on this record, save for one (an impressive feat, no doubt); however, as the album progresses, it becomes increasingly apparent that maintaining a consistent level of quality was a herculean task. Despite these shortcomings, there remains something curiously intriguing about the record, drawing in those who appreciate artists pushing their creative boundaries, even if the outcome doesn’t consistently hit the mark.

Below is a rating for each song on a scale of 1-10:

“Look Out” – 5

“Standing On Dat” – 5.5

“Lightning McQueen” – 4

“Bag Talk” – 6

“Did It First” – 7

“Mission Man” – 5

“Victory Lap” – 5

“Roll Em” – 6

“Spicnspan” – 6

“Set It Off” – 7.5

“Big Glam” – 6

“Medusa” – 6

“Rara” – 6

“Hogwartz” – 7

“Lame-o Laughtrack” – 5

“Matrix” – 6

“Harambe” – 6.5

“Mardi Gras” – 4

“OMD” – 5

“Onenottwo” – 4

“Fail2win” – 6

“Da Blues” – 4

“Venus” – 6

“Demi” – 4.5

“Lescc” – 5

“Summit” – 6

“Hood Love Story” – 5

“All 4U” – 6

“I See” – 4

“Almighty” – 5

Rating/Good – This album can be deemed a solid effort, particularly given its ambitious scope. Despite its imperfections, it stands out as a good offering for those who seek innovation and daring experimentation in music.

In the sphere of emerging talents, Grace Inspace stands as a beacon of promise, steadfastly carving her path towards the pinnacle of the pop charts. Guided by an undeniable talent and supported by the remarkable debut EP “Sunshine Kid,” her trajectory leaves no room for doubt regarding the ultimate destination of her journey.

By sheer serendipity, I stumbled upon Grace’s music on Tuesday. She unveiled a collaboration between herself and one of my favourite, cherished London-based singer/songwriters. This artist is renowned for her tantalising, atmospheric blend of contemporary R&B/Soul and Latin Pop. The track “25” serves as a testament to the soundscape she is poised to champion.

A discernible contrast is evident between the opening and closing tracks of the EP. The opener, “Sunshine Kid,” reveals itself as a beautiful piano ballad, while the closer, “Last Girl” – my personal favourite on this record – emerges as the most experimental and resounding stadium anthem tune within this collection. It’s a track that pushes genre boundaries, representing a perfect and synergetic blend between “Riot Girl” Pop-Punk (reminiscent of “Bikini Kill’s” hits from the 90s) and synth-pop.

This record has taken my breath away. Here’s my rating for each song on a scale of (1-10):

“Sunshine Kid” – 10

“Good Days” – 10

“Oxytocin” – 10

“25” – 9

“No Grown Ups” – 10

“Redwood Curtian” – 10

“Last Girl” – 10

Rating/Excellent: Looking forward to her success; an exciting career ahead of her!)

My fascination with West African music was ignited by the revelation of Cathrin Finch & Seckou Kiatra, a harmonious musical duo crafting ethereal Kora & harp melodies. During my stay in the UK, serendipity led me to encounter Burna Boy, a trailblazer propelling Afrobeats (also known as Afro-pop or Afro-fusion) to the forefront of popular musical genres. His previous masterpiece, “Love Damini,” not only achieved commercial success but also soared to the Zenith of Nigerian albums on the Billboard chart, making his latest effort a remarkable comeback.

The album’s titular track, “I Told Them” (feat. GZA), not only inaugurates the album but also encapsulates its essence with masterful precision. Its sonic tapestry evokes a symphony of sounds reminiscent of Shaggy’s iconic works from the mid-1990s and early 2000s. Similarly, tracks like “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” (feat. 21 Savage) carry a backbeat akin to Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me,” while “Thanks” (feat. J. Cole) exudes similar qualities. Of note is the captivating spoken-word interlude within the titular track.

Other instances of spoken-word artistry grace this album, with one of the most noteworthy and touching being “12 Jewels,” where RZA eloquently encapsulates a collection of intrinsic values: knowledge, wisdom, understanding, freedom, justice, equality, food, clothing, shelter, love, peace, and happiness. It retains a raw production quality akin to the distinct quality of an iPhone recording.

Significantly, there’s a touch of UK-drill influence evident in this album. In “Cheat on Me,” Dave infuses the track with the rhythmic sway and expressive characteristics of UK Drill. The persistent high hats on the track exhibit a trap-like vibe, a common element in drill music. Furthermore, “Big 7” resonates with “UK-drill” language and slang, seamlessly integrating this stylistic aspect into the album.

Amidst the collection of vibrant West African pop hits, it’s the moments of simplicity that wield remarkable power, as exemplified by “If I’m Lying,” a particularly impactful composition carrying a genuine and heartening message. This album, lyrically, provokes a lot of thought and reflection. It stands as a strong body of work.

Here’s my rating for each song on a scale of (1-10):

“I Told Them” (feat. GZA) – 10

“Normal” – 7

“On Form” – 7

“Sittin’ On Top Of The World” (feat. 21 Savage) – 10

“Tested, Approved & Trusted” – 7

“Cheat On Me” (feat. Dave) – 8

“Virgil” – 7

“Big 7” – 10

“Dey Play” – 6

“City Boys” – 9

“Giza” – 10

“12 Jewels” – 10

“If I’m Lying” – 10

“Thanks” (feat. J. Cole) – 10

“Talibans II” – 6

Rating/Excellent – This will be on my rotation.

The ginger-haired, unsuspecting pop sensation has burst back onto the scene with an album that has blindsided everyone in the best possible way.

He’s truly explored the whole spectrum of his artistry up to this point.

“Subtract” isn’t your run-of-the-mill Ed Sheeran album; it boldly refuses to mimic the pop standard of hits like “Divide,” “Equals,” or his recent collaborative ventures. Instead, it stands as an independent masterpiece – an Acoustic/Folk Singer-Songwriter album that wears its rawness, intimate depth, and sheer beauty on its sleeve.

Among its tracks, you’ll find a collection of pop gems, and perhaps the shiniest of them all is “Eyes Closed,” a creation shaped by the genius of “Max Martin.” Even though Martin’s trademark songwriting technique peeks through in this track, its lyrical potency is undeniable.

The rest of the tracks on Subtract come to life under the skillful guidance of “The National’s” Aaron Dessner. Together, he and Ed form an unbreakable musical partnership.

“Subtract” unfolds the narrative of what Ed himself regards as the most challenging chapter of his life. A tapestry woven from personal trials—his wife’s health struggles, the painful loss of his dearest friend, and the unending courtroom battles to preserve his songwriting integrity—these events led him to an emotional abyss he had never ventured into before. This emotional journey is palpable throughout the album.

Its opener, “Boat,” emerges like the dawn, setting the tone for this collection with breathtaking clarity, especially in its bridge where Ed’s husky voice resounds, proclaiming, “The waves won’t break my boat.”

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg—this album hosts a series of raw and uncensored melodies that narrate a story so intense it even brought him to the brink of mortality. A vivid reflection of this is the second track, “Salt Water.”

What’s more, this marks Ed Sheeran’s premiere album to feature a succession of piano ballads. Tracks like “Borderline” and “Sycamore” scale melodious heights, boasting treble clef crescendos that bear an unmistakable “Elton John” flair.

My standout pick from this record is undoubted “Hills of Aberfeldy”. It resonates with a profoundly Scottish/Gaelic Folk essence that just sweeps you away. What’s truly captivating is that this piece was penned before the creation of Ed’s second album, “Multiply.” Even back then, he envisioned it as the grand finale for “Subtract.” Remarkably, Ed’s journey with “Subtract” began shortly after his debut album’s release. He dedicated himself to sculpting an album that mirrors his current self, and the result is striking. This album oozes authenticity: Ed’s self-expression has never been more resolute.

Right now, there’s a universal adoration for Ed Sheeran that transcends age barriers.

And now, for my ratings of the songs on this remarkable album, scaling from 1 to 10:

“Boat” – 7

“Salt Water” – 8

“Eyes Closed: – 6

“Life Goes On” – 7.5

“Dusty” – 6.5

“End of Youth” – 9

“Colourblind” – 5

“Curtains” – 6

“Borderline” – 8

“Spark” – 5

“Vega” – 8

“Sycamore” – 8

“No Strings” – 7

“The Hills of Aberfeldy” – 10

Score/GOOD – Overall, this album has swayed me, someone who usually fills their car with seventies and eighties hits along with a dose of indie gems. But this album? It has nestled itself in my heart.

New Jeans have ignited a fresh craze within the realm of K-POP. They’re signed with “ADOR,” an independent label nestled under the South Korean music giant, “HYBE.” Anticipation surrounds their imminent EP, poised to reshape the genre’s contours as we currently know them. I foresee an impact reminiscent of Lorde’s paradigm-shifting “Pure Heroine,” a work that ushered pop minimalism onto the mainstream music canvas. The track “Royals,” culled from that opus, set the stage ablaze upon its 2013 debut. A stunning revelation is the EP’s striking emergence at the zenith of the Billboard 200 chart during the week of its release.

The vanguard and preeminent gem of this EP is christened “Super Shy.” Its dominion spans the K-Pop soundscape like a tempest. This track ascended to South Korea’s coveted Circle Digital Chart throne, clinching NewJeans their third consecrated chart-topper in the nation. On an international spectrum, it assumes its pinnacle across diverse charts, reigning supreme in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan. The crescendo reaches its zenith, marking its highest attainment on the Billboard Global 200 (at the distinguished second place), the UK Singles Chart (capturing the 52nd spot), and the US Billboard Hot 100 (nestling into the 48th slot).

Inaugurating my rendezvous with this group, I happened upon “Super Shy” via an Instagram story shared by a friend. Its production instantaneously captivated me, leading me to assume I had unearthed a novel indie UK garage group. The song’s backbeat exuded a resemblance to Shanks & Bigfoot’s classic “Sweet Like Chocolate.” It was, in reality, a K-Pop song. A stark departure from the run-of-the-mill K-Pop anthems that I hear in the gym.

Here’s my rating for each song on a scale of (1-10):

“New Jeans” – 7

“Super Shy” – 10

“ETA” – 7

“Cool With You” – 8

“Get Up” – 6

“ASAP” – 9

Rating/Excellent – A pop gem.

With his signature lyrical prowess, Intellect paints vivid scenes that resonate with authenticity and emotional depth, showcasing his undeniable talent as a storyteller.

Drawing parallels to acclaimed lyricists such as Nas, Common, and Mos Def, Intellect brings a unique perspective shaped by his personal experiences and background. Through his verses, he navigates themes of struggle, survival, and perseverance, offering listeners a glimpse into the complexities of urban life. The track’s somber tone is heightened by Dave East’s poignant contribution, adding layers of depth to the song’s narrative.

What sets “Too Many Losses” apart is its authenticity. Intellect’s lyrics are not merely observations from a distance but reflections of lived experiences grounded in gritty realism. Each word carries weight, as Intellect confronts the harsh truths of street existence with unflinching honesty.
