Stemming from the humble beginnings of a lost idea written down on an old whiteboards, the rock band, Midnight Atmosphere, creates a playful and catchy three minutes out of an interesting and unique idea.
We’ve all been through a two-week phase of planning out our days and meticulously crafting daily schedules on whiteboards and planners that all eventually meet the same end, which is being forgotten. More often than not, these lost ideas never come to fruition and the plans you wrote down on the whiteboard remain forever in the past.
Whiteboards by Midnight Atmosphere shows why some of the best ideas we’ve had might actually be the ones we forgot about.
The idea for the song came from discovering an old whiteboard, the band used to jot down soon-to-be-forgotten chord progressions, and the band uses the whiteboard as a metaphor for life and being in the present.
Along with the song’s incredibly upbeat, catchy instrumentation it also has in-depth, useful lyrics, my favorite lines being from the third verse of the song:
“ Once a message lost in time
Has been revitalized
An idea written down, not memorized
Was forgotten, but now it’s prioritized.
This a positive message that tells us that even the ideas and plans we think may be lost in the past forever can still be resurrected and turned into something great and worthwhile.
In terms of instrumentation, I think this song has a lot to love. The fast-paced, high-energy chords are reminiscent of early 2000s pop punk (a genre that admittedly has a soft spot in my hip-hop-dominated heart), and the mini synth rampage toward the end of the song is a lot of fun to listen to.
Score/Good: Although this may be an early song in their career, Midnight Atmosphere is a band with a lot of heart and is solely here to have fun. Whiteboards is a warm, vibrant track that doesn’t take itself too seriously and it’s all the better for it.
